Enlighten yourself with the useful benefits of honey…
We have all heard our grandparents and parents rave about the benefits of honey. Even the Holy Prophet told his followers that “There are two cures for you: honey and the Qur’an”.
This sweet syrup made from the nectar of flowers consists of 17-20% water, 76-80% glucose, wax, and mineral salts. Honey consists of various advantages and caters to several problems listed as follows:
Treatment of Cough
A home remedy for treating cough is a mixture of honey and lemon juice in warm water. A tablespoon of raw honey, 2-3 times a day, could control coughing. The best honey for the treatment of cough is Buckwheat Honey.
Treatment of Wounds
Honey contains trace amounts of compounds, such as hydrogen peroxide and methylglyoxal, that have wound-healing properties.
Treatment of Eye Infections
If you have an eye infection such as pink eyes, diluting honey with water and applying it to the eyes two times a day can reduce the infection.
Antibacterial Properties
Honey has antibacterial and antifungal properties. The antibacterial property is more effective if you dilute honey with water. It is a good remedy for dry, itchy, and wind burnt skin. It also helps in speeding up the healing process of face and body acne.
Rich in Antioxidants
A daily dose of raw honey can boost your immune system by introducing antioxidants such as phenols, enzymes, and flavonoids in the bloodstream. Antioxidants can reduce the risk of heart attacks and certain types of cancers. The darker the raw honey, the more antioxidants it has.
Alternate Sweetener
Avoid processed white sugar whenever you can. Substitute honey as a sweetener. It is healthier and can lower LDL Cholesterol, triglycerides, and inflammation.
Honey for Skincare
Milk and honey mixed have been used by many cultures for attaining glowing, beautiful skin. Mix 1 tbsp of honey with 1 tbsp of milk and apply it to your face every morning. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash it off.
There have been several mentions in the Holy Quran, as well as by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) on the importance of honey. The Holy Quran states:
“…There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.” (Surah An Nahl, 69)
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Honey is a remedy for every illness and the Quran is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Quran and honey.”(Sahih Bukhari)
Moreover, Abu Said Al-Khudri narrated: A man came to the Prophet and said, “My brother has some abdominal trouble.” The Prophet said to him:
“Let him drink honey.” The man came for the second time, and the Prophet said to him, “Let him drink honey.” He came for the third time and the Prophet said, “Let him drink honey.” He returned and said, “I have done that”. The Prophet then said, “Allah has said the truth, but your brother’s abdomen has told a lie. Let him drink honey.” So he made him drink honey and he was cured. (Bukhari)
